Scott Cunningham
Ok, so, yeah I know that a lot of people consider Scott Cunningham's work to
be very "Fluffy Bunny". His work is
likely to be the "one book" read by new "wiccans" and then quoted as
absolute truth.
Here's the thing. Scott's books are written for beginners. Their simplicity allows for a good introduction. "Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner" was a good starting point for me and it was his description of the Divine that rang true for me. Unfortunately his books are somewhat misunderstood. His "Standing Stones Book of Shadows" for instance is used a template for such a book. Another thing the fluffy bunny types seem to completely miss his his admonishment to read other books, even when you don't agree with all of them and also his admonishment to not take as "valid" everything one reads simply because it is in print. (That goes for everything I say too) Scott died in 1993 and thus missed the age of the World Wide Web. I think, to some extent, he would find frustration in those that seem to consider "Wicca" to be the one source of information. In his books he presents bibliographies and suggested readings. Those starting out should read other books. Scott was a good guy who wanted to make Wicca available to all and I don't think he should be slighted for it. I hope that his next incarnation brings him peace and wonder. We all need a little peace and wonder. Disclaimer: As I discuss Wicca as a religion on this site I describe the Wiccan religion with respect to my personal viewpoint, or, perhaps my "tradition". Different traditions describe things differently and those traditions may hold different concepts, beliefs and codes. |
