Wiccan Ethics
-Grayraven
An it harms none, do as ye will.
The Wiccan Rede. All of Eight words. This is the basic tenant of our ethical code. This simple statement, however, implies great responsibility. We must be responsible in our words and our deeds. These responsibilities can be broken down into six parts:
- Honesty
In religion and magical practice such as Wicca where thoughts lead to intent and put energy into the universe one must be honest. Honest to others and above all honest to self. There is great responsibility in being honest. Lies and deceit cheapen us and our actions. When we rob our words of the truth they lose their power.
- Health
Our minds and bodies are our corporeal manifestations in this world. How can we expect to be in tune with The Gods and nature when we are not of healthy mind and body? We must take care of our bodies, and thusly our minds, through regular exercise, good nutrition and overall general health practices. While we can enjoy the pleasures of the physical world we must also exercise moderation and balance.
- Courage
The concept of the spiritual warrior is thousands of years old. Native Americans had a culture of warriors. These warriors were not only men of war but also spiritual warriors. Ancient pagans often came from a warrior culture with similar spiritual implications. When embarking on magical journeys we must face our goals and our obstacles with courage. We must also face, courageously our Gods. We do not fear our Deity as in some other religions.
- Compassion
Compassion and generosity are very big parts of being Wiccan. Witches of ages past were healers and to heal one must have compassion. Our compassion extends beyond simply the others around us but to our planet and the other inhabitants thereof. Whenever possible we should exercise our compassion in outreach to the less fortunate. For some this is a financial commitment, for others it is a commitment of time or perhaps both.
Compassion starts with ourselves, however. We cannot be compassionate to others if we cannot love ourselves.
- Knowledge
Knowledge is as much a part of our religion as our spirituality. The Wiccan is always on a quest for new knowledge. Without this our minds stagnate. We must seek knowledge, not only of our religion history and mythology, but the religions and cultures of the world.
- Respect
Respect is one of the cornerstones of Wiccan belief and practice. We must respect The Gods, ourselves and others around us. This includes others of other religions. Tolerance is our watchword.

As I discuss Wicca as a religion on this site I describe the Wiccan religion
with respect to my personal viewpoint, or, perhaps my "tradition". Different traditions describe things
differently and those traditions may hold different concepts, beliefs and
codes.
